Afternoon Tea
a (very) brief history
The origins of afternoon tea could not be pinpointed exactly, but rumour has it that it was first introduced by the 7th Duchess of Bedford in 1842.
She requested for a tea and small delicate sandwiches and cakes to be introduced into the household, as mealtimes during that era were formally set and she had a ‘sinking feeling’ between lunch and dinner. Very soon after this in upper class circles, afternoon tea became a regular feature. In fact, it was considered such a British institution by the 1860s, university life and schooling provided instruction in the art and etiquette of afternoon tea.
Others say that it originated due to a change in eating culture and was served due to entertaining guests in the afternoon. Whatever the reason for its creation, as a nation we have embraced the delightful cheer it brings over the centuries.
These days there is no formal rigid structure that must be adhered to. At Vintage Days, we aim to create whatever atmosphere your event needs from recreating Victorian classics through to a modern twist on a classic British institution - the choice is yours.
